Exterior Paint Price Per Litre in India: 2026 Rate Chart

Exterior Paint Price Per Litre in India: 2026 Rate Chart

Ask three dealers the price of exterior paint and you will get three answers, all of them technically correct. The rate changes with pack size, shade depth, region and whatever scheme is running that month.

So here is a straight rate chart for 2026, plus the more useful skill: turning a price per litre into what you will actually spend.

Why Price Per Litre Is a Misleading Number

Two paints at Rs 400 a litre are not the same price if one covers 150 sq ft per litre and the other covers 105.

Run the numbers. On 2,000 sq ft with two coats, the first needs about 27 litres and costs Rs 10,800. The second needs about 38 litres and costs Rs 15,200. Same shelf price, Rs 4,400 apart.

This is the single most common mistake in paint buying, and dealers are not going to point it out.

2026 Exterior Paint Rate Chart by Brand

Grade Typical products Price per litre Coverage Effective cost per sq ft (2 coats)
Economy acrylic Local and unbranded exteriors Rs 150-250 80-110 sq ft/L Rs 3.20-5.60
Mid-range Berger Bison, Nerolac Suraksha, Indigo Rs 280-420 100-125 sq ft/L Rs 4.80-7.90
Premium Apex Ultima, WeatherCoat Long Life, Weathershield Max Rs 420-650 110-140 sq ft/L Rs 6.20-11.20
Premium value UVCLAAD Aura (20L) Rs 350 130-150 sq ft/L Rs 4.90-5.60

That last column is the one to compare. Not the first.

Rate Chart by Pack Size

Pack size changes the per-litre rate more than most people expect. Using UVCLAAD Aura as a worked example:

Pack Price Per litre Approx. coverage (2 coats)
1 litre Rs 425 Rs 425 65-75 sq ft
4 litre Rs 1,596 Rs 399 260-300 sq ft
10 litre Rs 3,596 Rs 360 650-750 sq ft
20 litre Rs 6,996 Rs 350 1,300-1,500 sq ft

The pattern holds across brands. Buying a full house worth of paint in 4-litre cans costs you 12 to 15 percent more than the same volume in 20-litre buckets.

How to Convert Price Into Cost Per Square Foot

The formula is short:

Cost per sq ft = (Price per litre ÷ Coverage per litre) × Number of coats

Take a Rs 350 per litre paint covering 140 sq ft per litre, two coats:

(350 ÷ 140) × 2 = Rs 5.00 per sq ft

Do this for every option you are considering and the decision usually makes itself. It takes about ninety seconds.

Why Bulk Packs Are Cheaper Per Litre

Partly packaging cost, which is a real chunk of a 1-litre can’s price. Partly logistics. And partly because manufacturers want to move volume through contractors rather than one can at a time through retail.

None of that helps you if you only need 6 litres for a compound wall. Bulk pricing is only a saving if you actually use the paint.

Hidden Costs Most People Forget

  • Primer — Rs 120 to Rs 280 per litre, and you will need roughly 60 percent of your finish coat volume.
  • Exterior putty — Rs 25 to Rs 45 per kg if the surface needs levelling.
  • Crack filler and sealant — small quantity, but on an older wall it adds up.
  • Scaffolding — Rs 8 to Rs 15 per sq ft on multi-storey work, often quoted separately.
  • Tinting charges — deep shades cost more per litre than whites, sometimes 15 to 25 percent more.

A quotation that shows only “paint” and “labour” is hiding at least three of these.

What You Should Actually Budget

For a standard 2,000 sq ft exterior with normal surface condition, in 2026:

  • Material only, mid-range paint: Rs 14,000 to Rs 20,000
  • Material only, premium paint: Rs 20,000 to Rs 32,000
  • Labour: Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000
  • Scaffolding, if applicable: Rs 12,000 to Rs 25,000

Which lands most complete exterior jobs somewhere between Rs 45,000 and Rs 90,000. Anything quoted dramatically below that band is skipping something, usually primer or coat count.

Why the Same Paint Costs Different Amounts in Different Cities

Freight is the obvious factor. Paint is heavy and mostly water, so shipping it to a hill station or a remote district costs real money per litre.

Beyond that, dealer density matters. In a city with six competing dealers on one road, margins compress. In a town with one supplier, they do not. Expect a 5 to 12 percent spread on the same product between a metro and a tier-3 town.

Scheme timing also moves the number. Most manufacturers run dealer schemes around Diwali and again before the pre-monsoon painting rush in March and April. Buying in those windows can be worth 8 to 15 percent, though the discount often reaches you as a free pack rather than a lower rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does 20 litre exterior paint cost?

A 20-litre exterior paint bucket costs between Rs 3,600 and Rs 12,000 in India in 2026, depending on grade. Economy packs start near Rs 3,600, mid-range sits around Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000, and premium products reach Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000.

What is the cheapest exterior paint in India?

Unbranded economy acrylic emulsions sell for Rs 150 to Rs 250 per litre. They cost less upfront but typically last 3 to 4 years and offer lower coverage, so the cost per square foot advantage is smaller than it appears.

How do I calculate paint cost per square foot?

Divide the price per litre by the coverage per litre, then multiply by the number of coats. A Rs 350 per litre paint covering 140 sq ft per litre works out to Rs 5.00 per square foot for two coats.

Why is exterior paint costlier than interior?

Exterior formulations use more UV-stable pigments, higher grade binders and additives for water and fungal resistance. These raw materials cost significantly more than what interior emulsions require.

Is GST included in paint MRP?

Yes, the printed MRP on paint packs in India is inclusive of GST. Bulk and contractor purchases against a GST invoice may be quoted excluding tax, so confirm which basis a trade quotation uses.
