“Two coats” is on every specification sheet in the country, and it is right most of the time. It is also an answer to a question about film thickness, not about coat count, which is why it sometimes fails.
The Standard Answer and Why It Exists
Two finish coats over a primed surface is the industry standard because it reliably achieves the dry film thickness the paint was formulated to deliver, and because a single coat almost never covers evenly regardless of how thickly it is applied.
One coat leaves thin spots at edges, roller laps, and anywhere the applicator moved slightly faster. Those thin spots are where the film fails first.
What Dry Film Thickness Means
Wet paint is mostly water. As it dries, that water leaves and what remains is the dry film, measured in microns.
Most exterior emulsions target somewhere between 60 and 100 microns of total dry film across two coats. That figure is not decorative. It is what the durability, water resistance and UV protection claims are calculated against.

Count the tins. If the estimate said 34 litres for two coats and 22 litres were used, you did not get two full coats. This is the single most useful audit available to a homeowner.
Look at it in raking light. Late afternoon sun at a shallow angle to the wall reveals thin patches, roller laps and missed areas that are invisible in flat light.
Check the difficult places. Edges, corners, behind downpipes, under sills, around grilles. Coverage shortfalls concentrate wherever the roller could not reach easily.
